‘The Strangers: Prey At Night’
“Because you were home.” Say this line to anyone who has seen the brutal home invasion thriller The Strangers and they will straight up recoil in fear. That movie did some permanent psychological damage to this reviewer, right up there on the level of Jaws or The Descent (to this day, you’ll never catch my ass within a country mile of a cave). All of this is to say that The Strangers: Prey At Night had some big shoes to fill when it was first released in 2018, and I’m not sure you’ll find a solitary soul who finds this sequel superior to the original. That said, there is ONE SCENE in this movie that I will never, ever forget as long as I live. It involves a young man being chased through a waterpark awash with neon lights while Bonnie Tyler’s “Total Eclipse Of The Heart” is BLARING. No spoilers, but it is visceral, it is surprising, it is terrifying, and it is a set piece that everyone who made this film should be proud of. It takes place right at the one-hour mark of the movie; watch it before this movie leaves Netflix on July 11, 2022.
