‘Thoroughbreds’
Thoroughbreds may be the weirdest teen dramedy you’ve ever seen. Cory Finley’s directorial debut stars Split‘s Anya Taylor-Joy as Lily, a wealthy high schooler, and Olivia Cooke (Ready Player One) as Amanda, her sociopathic friend. The girls hatch a plan to murder Lily’s abusive stepfather, but — as with most teen murder plots — things quickly get complicated when they recruit a drug dealer (Anton Yelchin) to seal the deal. While Thoroughbreds follows many of the same tropes as dark comedies like Heathers and Natural Born Killers, Taylor-Joy and Cooke’s performances take the film to a new level. No matter how bone-chilling the moment, it’s impossible to look away when the young stars share the screen.
