‘Tigerland’
You can thank Joel Schumacher for giving Colin Farrell his first big break stateside in this film that follows a band of army recruits during their final stages of training at Fort Polk, Louisiana, before they ship off to Vietnam. What’s unique about this war drama is that our boys never leave the U.S., but Schumacher and DP Matthew Libatique use handheld cameras, murky green-tinted settings, and intimate, gritty training sequences to convey the brutality of every aspect of war. With strong turns for character actors Clifton Collins Jr. and Shea Whigham, Farrell steals the movie as Bozz, an expert marksman hell-bent on getting himself (and any other kindred spirit) kicked out of the army.
