‘Waves’
In his third feature, Waves, filmmaker Trey Edward Schults takes his audience inside the Williams’ home in South Florida where we meet Tyler (a revelatory Kelvin Harrison Jr.), a promising high school wrestler, his quiet sister, Emily (Taylor Russell), their domineering father (Sterling K. Brown), and their loving stepmother, Catherine (Renee Elise Goldsberry). When tragedy strikes, the family unit is shattered, and each member must go through a process of accepting responsibility and eventually arriving at forgiveness. Aided by a score from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross and vibrant, stylish cinematography from Drew Daniels, Waves is a tender, meditative and intimate character drama.
