‘Widows’
If you want a movie that is similar in concept but completely opposite in tone of Ocean’s 8—and if you’re looking for something to celebrate the great Viola Davis one day after her birthday—look no further than Widows, Steve McQueen’s 2018 heist drama that stars Davis, Michelle Rodriguez, Elizabeth Debicki, and Cynthia Erivo as widows who decide to finish a heist job planned by their late, criminal husbands. Davis, a powerhouse actress who’s been stealing films in Hollywood for years, finally gets a first-billing role and she loses herself completely in her character’s raging grief. Atlanta‘s Brian Tyree Henry also gives a shiver-inducing performance as the film’s villain, the kind that will feed your anxiety, as does Get Out‘s Daniel Kaluuya, who plays Henry’s on-screen brother. It’s a deadly serious film that’s also somehow endlessly fun, and you’ll be on the edge of your seat up until the satisfying end.
