‘Wonder Woman 1984’
Wonder Woman 1984 is one of the most anticipated movies of 2020. Originally scheduled to open theatrically back in June, the movie instead landed on HBO Max on Christmas Day, becoming the biggest budget movie to ever premiere on a streaming service. A lot of grinchy grumps are tearing it (and each other) apart on Twitter, but if you’re a fan of superhero spectacles, you’ll find lots to love about the sequel to 2017’s Wonder Woman. Director Patty Jenkins and star Gal Gadot each return to the franchise, this time squaring off against a pair of supervillains: a very Trump-y huckster turned Wishmaster (Pedro Pascal, The Mandalorian) and a frumpy gemologist turned Crazy Cat Lady (Kristen Wiig). Is the movie perfect? Of course not! Is there enough here to keep you distracted for 2.5 hours? Of course there is! (Plus, the popcorn you’re gonna eat on your couch is much less expensive —and fresher!— than what you would’ve got at the theater.)
