While filming Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Mark Hamill took serious offense to director Rian Johnson‘s interpretation of Luke Skywalker, the character Hamill first made famous in 1977.
In a video that surfaced today, Hamill discusses his disappointment with Johnson’s Skywalker, even going so far as to say that the character is “not my Luke Skywalker.” The actor’s main issue with The Last Jedi‘s depiction of the Jedi Master comes down to his belief that the “real” Luke Skywalker would never give up. “Jedis don’t give up. I mean, even if he had a problem, he would maybe take a year to regroup. But if he made a mistake, he would try to right that wrong,” says the OG Skywalker.
Hamill describes this divergent understanding as a “fundamental difference” between he and Rian Johnson, but he acknowledges that there’s nothing he can do to change Skywalker’s fate. “It’s not my story any more. It’s somebody else’s story. And Rian needed me to be a certain way to make the ending effective.”
In order to reconcile their differences, Hamill “had to think of Luke as a different character.” Says the actor, “Maybe he’s Jake Skywalker—he’s not my Luke Skywalker.” LOL, Hamill.
