DC Universe’s ‘Swamp Thing’ Reduced from 13 to 10 Episodes, But It Will Still Debut May 31

Despite reports claiming that DC Universe drama Swamp Thing has shut down production, the streaming service plans to roll out the series as scheduled on May 31. Decider has learned that DC Universe and Warner Bros. have reduced the first season from 13 to 10 episodes for creative reasons, but that seems to be the only major change ahead of the series premiere. Earlier on Wednesday, rumors swirled that Swamp Thing had shut down earlier than expected, with local paper Wilmington Star News reporting that producers plan to “rewrite the ending” of episode 10 to serve as a season finale.

According to Wilmington, North Carolina news outlet WECT NewsSwamp Thing‘s cast and crew were informed “of the changes during filming on Tuesday night.” Sources close to production told WECT that “the reaction on the set was one of shock,” as production was scheduled to continue filming through May.

On Wednesday morning, Swamp Thing Virginia Madsen confirmed news of the shut down on Instagram, writing, “I’m beyond sad. What a terrible decision. We have been cut to the core by those who have never set foot into the Swamp. And despite the rule I am going to use the hashtag #swampthing.” Madsen’s post has since been deleted.

Based on the DC characters created by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson, Swamp Thing follows Abby Arcane (Crystal Reed) as she investigates a deadly virus that has infected a small town in Louisiana. Abby believes that the virus originated in the town’s swamp, but as she begins looking into the situation, she discovers that there’s something much more sinister lurking beneath the surface than a pesky virus. In addition to Reed and Madsen, who plays Maria Sunderland, Andy Bean appears as scientist Alec Holland, Derek Mears stars as the titular swamp creature, and Ian Ziering guest stars as stuntman-turned-movie star Daniel Cassidy.

Swamp Thing premieres May 31 on DC Universe.
