High School Musical: The Musical: The Series returned to Disney+ August 9 with a star-studded, charming, delightfully nostalgic Season 4. If you sped through the latest eight episodes, you’re likely wondering if we’ve seen the last of East High’s halls or if more HSMTMTS stories await. And we’ve got the answer.

Season 4 of the series inspired by Disney’s popular High School Musical films — showed East High’s drama teens back from a summer at Camp Shallow Lake and ready to take on senior year. In a fitting choice, they set out to put on a stage production of High School Musical 3: Senior Year, but those plans got derailed when Disney and O.G. Wildcats Chad Danforth (Corbin Bleu), Taylor McKessie (Monique Coleman), Ryan Evans (Lucas Grabeel), Martha Cox (Kaycee Stroh), Coach Jack Bolton (Bart Johnson), and Ms. Darbus (Alyson Reed) showed up to shoot a movie — High School Musical 4, to be exact.

With several characters heading off to college and Gina about to star in Romeo & Juliet, have we officially seen the last of HSMTMTS? Wondering if there will be a High School Musical: The Musical: The Series Season 5 on Disney+? Or if High School Musical 4: The Reunion is a real movie in the works? Here’s what we know about the future of the beloved HSM-verse.

Will There Be A High School Musical: The Musical: The Series Season 5?

While we’d love to keep watching these teens take on the world with the help of catchy songs and flashy performances, the full title of HSMTMTS Season 4 is High School Musical: The Musical: The Series: The Final Season, so unfortunately this is where the Disney+ series ends for now.

Production on the final season of the show concluded in December 2022. And on June 21, 2023, creator Tim Federle posted a final season announcement to Instagram, saying, “After 4 years at East High, it’s time to graduate. This will be our final, endgame season. This show brought the most extraordinary cast — and crew, and collaborators — to my life. To the fans who embraced our super-meta series: we ‘don’t not love you.’ We can’t wait to share our epic 4th act with you all. SEE YOU ALL AT GRADUATION!”

Though the series is ending, there’s a chance we aren’t saying goodbye to High School Musical quite yet…

Will There Really Be A High School Musical 4: The Reunion?

The HSM alum gathering back at East High to film High School Musical 4: The Reunion was a major focus of HSMTMTS Season 4. So will there really be another High School Musical film in the world? Or was that an elaborate fictional storyline to ensure a star-studded final season that would bring the Disney+ series full circle?

Ahead of HSMTMTS Season 4 premiere day, Disney+ hadn’t announced any plans for a real fourth film in the High School Musical series, but that doesn’t mean it’s out of the question. It’s clear that original cast members are more than happy to support the HSM-verse, and some — including leading man Zac Efron — have even shown interest in a High School Musical continuation or reboot of sorts. Back in May 2022, Efron said “of course” when E! News asked if he had any interest in returning to his HSM roots. “Seriously, having the opportunity in any form to go back and work with that team would be so amazing,” he said. “My heart’s still there. That would be incredible. I hope it happens.”

Until then, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series — along with the High School Musical movies — are streaming on Disney+ for any rewatch needs.
