The original WWW

The original WWW, originally uploaded by ki113rb33s.

I haven't blogged a gratuitous picture of glasgow for a while, so here's the facade of a warehouse in James Watt St. (Anderston) on a day that the sun actually shone.

Took this today with my new camera..
I like the old-fashioned atmosphere it has, with the grain and the contrast.

Today I am The Answer (i.e. 42)

Yes I'm 42 at last, how long have I been waiting for that to happen (Hint: Not!)
My lovely family softened the blow by buying me a camera (canon eos 350d if you're interested.)
Hardly had I finished showing it off around the office than this guy ran his low-loader aground right outside our window, across an intersection and blocking both streets. How could I resist? :-)

Sparkle Sparkle - Demolition IV

Taken by some other geezer on flickr I like this one because its more atmospheric than my ones of the same thing, I love the way the tin-foil building is shining on the stone one.

look at the wee people

I wanted to take a good picture of the building, I didn't expect the people to be quite so interesting too.

Foundations

My son was asking about foundations last night, we got on to the subject of big buildings and I told him I'd take a photo to show him what they do.
Which reminded me that I was going to blog some pics of the building site across the road from the office.
Here's a nice view of work going on on the foundations, the blue machine on the right is drilling holes which get filled with concrete, and the reinforcing steel you can see near the back.

The past is another country; but you can see it from here on a clear day

DSC00618
I took this picture, of what Americans might call a "Vacant Lot", today. It is a few streets from our office in what is variously known as "Anderston", "Glasgow's International Financial Services District" or "Glasgow's notorious red-light district" depending on the context.
I was amazed at the number of layers of history that you can see imprinted on these two walls, from the gable of the cottage apparently embedded in the newer wall on the left, through at least one layer of sandstone and two layers of brick. The brick isn't one age, if you look carefully you can see that it too has been extended upwards as this part of the city evolved. At the bottom of this page is a photograph of Anderston Village in the 1860's.
The "vacant lot" is down in the far right hand corner of this map near to the junction of West College Street and Brown Street, on the right of Brown Street.
Looking on Google maps today you can clearly see the space on the right of Brown Street north of the junction, but West College Street is now Crimea Street, and the MOD's Kentigern House sits across the top half of Carrick Street.

Demolition III

Since they knocked down the building next door it has let us get a great view of the nice building.

Metal vsConcrete - Demolition II

Got in to work this morning to find the Big Machine across the road tearing into the top floor with much noise and dust. So I took some pictures, of which this is the most dramatic. I should probably upload the others to flickr, but I'm generally too lazy.

Demolition

They're demolishing a building across the street from our office.
Two of these huge machines are eating that 70's concrete like a mouse through butter.
This is the second building they've replaced since I started working here, this time I'll try to blog some pictures of the more interesting things they do. The last one they did involved digging a huge hole for two or three sub basements, without the surrounding buildings falling in, I can't for the life of me remember what the technique they used is called!

I know nothing, I'm not a fortune teller, and you'd be insane to think that I am. This disclaimer was cribbed from an email footer I once received. It is so ridiculous I had to have it for myself.
