Washington is a city of important men and the women they married before they grew up. Is that how the saying goes? Something like that, anyway. All those tidy little summations of local phenomena—California is fine if you’re an orange; first prize one week in Philadelphia, second prize two weeks in Philadelphia— turn out, after close inspection, to be even more accurate than they seemed at first hearing.
