In 2023, the US population grew by roughly 0.5 percent — around 1.58 million people — but the figure varies widely from state to state. Using Census Bureau data, the team at Visual Capitalist ranked the states that experienced population declines between July 1, 2022, and July 1, 2023.
In the space of a year, New York saw a population change of -0.52 percent, the largest decline of any state. In fact, the population of New York City alone dropped by 77,000 people over the same period — a bigger loss than was seen across the whole of California (75,000 people).
Puerto Rico had the second-largest population dip in terms of percentage changes (-0.45 percent), followed by Louisiana (0.31 percent) and Hawaii (-0.30 percent).
