Teen Mom Amber Portwood charged with domestic violence against ex-boyfriend Gary

Teen Mom's Amber Portwood has been charged with domestic violence after an episode of the hit show showed her repeatedly hitting her now ex-boyfriend.

If found guilty of the two felonies and one misdemeanour domestic violence charges Portwood faces up to three years in jail and fines of up to $10,000.

In violent scenes, Portwood was seen repeatedly slapping and pushing Gary Shirley in an expletive filled tirade. Her 260lb boyfriend did not retaliate.

The reality TV star is being charged with the felonies because the domestic violence was committed in the presence of  the couple's young daughter, according to police.

The police press release states that Leah was in the room on two separate occasions when her parents rowed.

'Portwood shoved Shirley against a wall, slapped him on the face and choked him.

'The incident was witnessed by the couple’s one-year-old child who sat in a child seat on a nearby bed.

'[On a second occasion] Portwood was videotaped slapping Shirley five times, punching him three times and kicking him at least once.

'Finally... Portwood is again videotaped in the presence of their child slapping Shirley in the face, and punching him several more times in the face and upper-body.'

The 20-year-old has not yet been arrested.

Police in her hometown of Anderson, California, must first submit an affidavit to the prosecutor who will make the final decision on the charges.

MTV, who handed over unedited footage of the incidents at the request of police, said: '[We] hope for a quick and fair resolution that allows everyone involved to move forward in a positive manner.'

Portwood found fame after featuring in the MTV reality series 16 And Pregnant and  breakout show Teen Mom, after falling pregnant with daughter Leah, now two.

Since the incidents, which prompted a storm of protest when they were screened, she has ended her relationship with Shirley.
