21 Savage says star-studded American Dream trailer 'was a parody,' has no plans for a biopic soon

The trailer featured Donald Glover, Natasha Lyonne, and "Stranger Things" star Caleb McLaughlin.

When 21 Savage released a trailer two weeks ago for what appeared to be a biopic titled American Dream starring Stranger Things' Caleb McLaughlin and noted super busy person Donald Glover as versions of himself, something was a bit off.

Maybe it was Natasha Lyonne as a gold-adorned queen knighting Glover's 21 Savage, or...no, that was probably it. Well, on the Club Shay Shay podcast, where Katt Williams recently lit a match just to watch it burn, the rapper confirmed that it was all a blur...er, spoof.

21 Savage says trailer was a 'parody'

"No, that was a parody," Savage told host Shannon Sharpe.

The trailer teased that American Dream: The 21 Savage Story was hitting theaters on Independence Day 2024, with "music inspired by the film" dropping Jan. 12 — but turns out the trailer was for 21 Savage's American Dream album, his first solo effort since 2018's I Am > I Was.

Since then, Savage has battled — and beat — the American immigration system, put out two collaborative albums (2020's Savage Mode II with Metro Boomin and 2022's Her Loss with Drake), and co-headlined the It Was All a Blur Tour with Canada's greatest rapping export.

To promote Her Loss, Savage and Drake doctored a parody Vogue cover of them that led the magazine's publisher to take legal action — to the tune of a $4 million lawsuit — with the two rappers settling for an undisclosed sum.

After that costly joke, you'd think that Savage would've learned his lesson but, then again, given how productive he's been over the past few years, a movie didn't seem out of the question. But Savage isn't ready to bring his story to the big screen. Not yet, anyway.

"I feel like it could be one day, they're gonna hate on it now though," Savage said about his potential biopic. "They're gonna be like 'why the fuck 21 Savage deserve a movie about him for?'"

Well, considering that the 31-year-old rapper was shot six times on his 21st birthday, was almost deported by the U.S. government, and still became one of the biggest musicians of the day might just warrant the film treatment.
