Uptown Girls

UPTOWN GIRLS Brittany Murphy, Dakota Fanning PG-13, 92 mins., 2003 (MGM)

Director Boaz Yakin’s sapfest follows the fractious relationship between a rock-star heiress (Murphy) in need of a reality-stick beating and a neurotic, neglected little rich girl (Fanning). It’s difficult to connect with these characters when the two usually effective actresses cling ferociously to their stereotypes: Murphy’s prancing around as a nanny in stilettos is just as annoying as Fanning’s steady stream of biting remarks. Those wanting a pick-me-up for the post-holiday blues should not venture Uptown. EXTRAS Like the movie, the extras — including a lackluster behind-the-scenes short and a banal ”Rockin’ Style” featurette about the supposedly stylish costume choices (no pants or denim for Murphy!) — are in dire need of a makeover.
