Hugh Jackman returns to Broadway: What should he sing?

It’s been a long seven years since Hugh Jackman shook his groove thing so expertly on the Great White Way in The Boy From Oz. Sure, since then we’ve had Cheyenne Jackson and Matthew Morrison grace the Broadway stage, but can anyone kick it as well as Hugh? More specifically, can any Hollywood A-lister sing and dance like he does? (And I’m counting you, John Travolta and Will Smith.) So thank God for Hugh Jackman: Back on Broadway, his newly-announced limited-run NYC one-man show, which starts previews on Oct. 25 (with an official opening planed for Nov. 10).

Like his sold-out Toronto and San Francisco concerts, the production will include “a personal selection of his favorite musical numbers.” In those cities, the 18-song set (all backed by a full orchestra) included “Over the Rainbow,” “As Time Goes By,” and “Lady Marmalade.” According to the Broadway show’s press rep, Hugh Jackman, Back on Broadway has been altered for New York. But it’s still unclear whether that set list is changing. So what do you want to hear Hugh sing? More gems from the earlier staged concerts include “A Little Less Conversation,” “Crazy Little Thing Called Love,” and, my favorite, Richard Marx’s “I’ll Be Right Here Waiting for You.” I’d be loathe to see him drop the Elvis and Queen, but thrilled to have him sing something as wonderful as “Rose’s Turn” from Gypsy, “Being Alive” from Company, or “Old Devil Moon” from Finian’s Rainbow.
