'Godzilla' reboot to terrorize theaters in 2014

One of the biggest surprises at this past summer’s San Diego Comic-Con was the announcement that Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures had formally greenlighted a reboot of the venerable monster movie franchise Godzilla, with a little-known director, Gareth Edwards (the British indie Monsters), at the helm. Today, the studios announced that Edwards’ self-professed “grounded [and] realistic” take on the fire-breathing giant lizard is set to sweep into multiplexes on May 16, 2014.

The statement also officially credited the film’s screenplay to David Callaham (The Expendables), David S. Goyer (The Dark Knight trilogy), and newcomer Max Borenstein. It also noted that the film “is expected to be presented in 3-D,” though it did not specify if the film would be shot natively in the format, or converted in post-production.

No casting was revealed.
