Following the awkward demotion of Ann Curry over the summer and the failure by Today to rebound in the ratings in the aftermath, NBC today announced another shakeup for the once-dominant morning show. Alexandra Wallace, executive producer of Rock Center With Brian Williams, will take over the reins (officially as Executive in Charge), becoming the first woman ever to steer the franchise. She quickly named veteran producer Don Nash to replace Jim Bell, who had been executive producer for seven years and reportedly was responsible for Curry’s ouster.

Today has been challenged by Good Morning America, which knocked NBC’s once-unrivaled ratings juggernaut off its perch for the first time in 17 years. GMA snapped Today‘s winning streak in April, and has topped its rival in the crucial 25-54 demo for 10 straight weeks this fall.

Nash, who’s worked at Today for 23 years, begins his new duties on Dec. 1.
