The Great Gatsby

May 10

In adapting F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic The Great Gatsby (out May 10), director Baz Luhrmann and his longtime creative partner and spouse, designer Catherine Martin, sought to stay true to the period while avoiding musty clichés of Jazz Age style. ”Baz said to me, ‘Not everyone can be in a beaded flapper dress or have one feather stuck into a headband,’ ” Martin says. ”Fitzgerald considered himself to be a child of this burgeoning America, so to honor the story, you have to make people feel they’re in the middle of something surprising and modern.”
