It might not be much of a surprise that Iron Man 3 is getting the IMAX 3D treatment, but that doesn't mean we're not thrilled about the news.

"With Iron Man 3 building on the events of Marvel's The Avengers, audiences are in for yet another incredible moviegoing experience from Marvel Studios," said Dave Hollis, Executive Vice President of Motion Picture Distribution for The Walt Disney Studios in a press release Tuesday. "We're thrilled to be able to offer that to fans in the larger-than-life action of IMAX 3D."

Iron Man 3 will mark the fourth IMAX 3D release for Marvel Entertainment, joining the ranks of Iron Man 2, Thor, and The Avengers. Directed by Shane Black (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang), this third installment of the hugely successful franchise ($1.2 billion worldwide) was reportedly not shot on IMAX or with 3D cameras, but the film is being digitally re-mastered to suit the format.

"Marvel and IMAX are a perfect one-two punch and the Iron Man franchise has become a global phenomenon that resonates with fans around the world," said Greg Foster, Chairman and President of IMAX Filmed Entertainment, in the same press release.

Iron Man 3 stars Robert Downey, Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, and Ben Kingsley, and will open in IMAX 3D internationally on April 25, and domestically on May 3.
