Will the fastest man alive be able to outrun prying eyes? Add that to the growing list of concerns Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) will now have to worry about on The Flash.

As the kindhearted newbie superhero adjusts to life with powers, Barry will be determined to help the people of Central City. Unsurprisingly, a mysterious red streak making random saves throughout town will catch the attention of his unknowing but inquisitive best friend, Iris West (Candice Patton).

“In the comic books, [Iris] is a famous, award-winning journalist, so we’re really seeing her from the ground up. As the season progresses, we’re going to see her take journalism to heart and that’s really going to be her beginning,” executive producer Andrew Kreisberg says. “For Iris, The Flash appearing and her interest in it—which you’ll find out more about why that’s happening—it’s really changed the course of her life too, and it’s really what sets her on the path of becoming the ultimate comic book character.”

But going down that route may put Barry’s secret identity in jeopardy. After all, keeping a big secret isn’t the easiest thing to do on network television—though Arrow managed to keep Laurel (Katie Cassidy) in the dark until the end of the second season. “It’s going to create all sorts of problems, because… Joe [Jesse L. Martin] wants Iris not to know more than anything in the world, and Barry’s dying to tell her,” Kreisberg says. “It’s going to lead to some heartbreaking things that are going to happen early on and also some hilariously funny things that happen early on.”

The Flash airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
