Who is Gwendoline Christie in the 'Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2'?

If you watched the new Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 trailer, you may have had the same reaction we did: Explosions! Dramatic speeches from Katniss! Effie looking fabulous! And wait, is that Brienne of Tarth?

Yep! Game of Thrones star Gwendoline Christie plays Commander Lyme, adding another role in an epic sci-fi/fantasy series to her resume. Christie is best known for wielding a sword and not putting up with Jaime Lannister's nonsense as Brienne in Game of Thrones. She also will appear in the upcoming Star Wars: The Force Awakens as the mysterious Captain Phasma, who wears a cape and shiny stormtrooper armor. Phasma is a member of the First Order, which is the evil new version of the Empire in The Force Awakens, but we still don't know if Christie plays an actual villain or if she just works for the bad guys.

And now, she's in The Hunger Games. You may have forgotten that Christie was supposed to even be in Mockingjay – Part 2, especially because she originally wasn't. American Horror Story star Lily Rabe was first cast as Commander Lyme, but she had to drop out due to a previous commitment performing Much Ado About Nothing in New York's Central Park. So, Christie stepped in and took her place in April 2014.

So who exactly is Commander Lyme? In the books, she's one of the leaders of the rebellion against the Capitol, and she originally hails from District 2. When Mockingjay – Part 1 ended, several other districts had sided with Katniss and the rebels of District 13, but because District 2 is so close to the Capitol and houses most of its military force, the area plays a pivotal role in the civil war.

As for Lyme herself, Katniss describes her as a muscular woman standing over six feet tall. (Christie herself is 6'3".) When Katniss meets Lyme for the first time, it takes her a while to recognize her, but she finally realizes that Lyme was a former champion in the Hunger Games many years ago.

So between The Hunger Games, Game of Thrones, and Star Wars, Christie plays a part in three of the biggest pop-culture franchises. "I can't help but feel like the unlikeliest girl at school," she told EW in April. "I never thought I'd be in these amazing projects."
