Universal destroyed all of Amy Winehouse's unreleased demos

Amy Winehouse’s album of outtakes, Lioness: Hidden Treasures, was released months after her 2011 death—and that will probably be her last new release, according to Billboard.

Universal Music U.K. chairman and CEO David Joseph told Billboard that he destroyed her unreleased demos. “It was a moral thing,” he said. “Taking a stem or a vocal is not something that would ever happen on my watch. It now can’t happen on anyone else’s.”

Back in 2011, songwriter Stefan Skarbek spoke to Rolling Stone about five of their unreleased collaborations, which were owned by Universal. “We did songs like ‘Monkey Boy,’ which were just fun tongue-in-cheek songs,” he said. “My biggest thing with her was she’d come to the studio in London and she’d always come in with some crazy story, boyfriend troubles or things like that.”

Winehouse has recently been the subject of press thanks to Asif Kapadia’s documentary on the late singer, Amy. The film, which features previously unseen footage of the star and interviews with her friends and family, comes out July 3. Read more over at Billboard.
