Parks and Rec: Harris Wittels died from heroin overdose, coroner confirms

Former Parks and Recreation co-executive producer Harris Wittels died from an accidental heroin overdose, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner.

The cause of death was revealed five months after Wittels died on Feb. 19 at 30 years old. He had previously spoken about his past battles with addiction to heroin and oxycodone.

He is credited with writing standout Parks and Rec episodes, such as “94 Meetings,” “Road Trip,” and “The Treaty.” Wittels occasionally appeared on the show as an animal control worker named Harris, who shared the real-life Harris’ love of jam band Phish. The comedian gained mainstream attention for the invention of the “Humblebrag” Twitter feed and its ensuing book.

Parks co-workers Amy Poehler, Aziz Ansari, and Jim O’Heir all gave heartfelt remembrances of Wittels after his death. In the series finale, the show cut to a black screen and read, “We love you, Harris” before rolling to credits.
