James Gunn shares story from Guardians of the Galaxy fan on Facebook

Hard at work on the sequel and only a little more than a year after its release, Guardians of the Galaxy continues to be a major facet in director James Gunn’s life. And as he recently revealed, the film’s impact continues to be felt by fans, and their stories are what drives him.

Gunn shared a story written to him on Facebook from a fan and father, who explained how Groot’s ability to convey many different emotions while only using one word helped him to better communicate with his 4-year-old son.

The boy, who has been diagnosed with dyspraxia, could only say a few words, making communication difficult. But after seeing how Groot communicated, he began to use the syllable “bah,” altering his tone to express different feelings, and even saying “Groot” to signify other things.

“I just wanted to thank you though, for a script and movie that was written so well that a four year old, three at that time, could connect with someone who had the same language barrier,” the father said, explaining that his son has also since been able to go to speech class. Gunn thanked him for the story, explaining “I love making movies because of stories like this.”
