Tracee Ellis Ross recreates mom Diana Ross' 'Work That Body' video

Mother’s Day already passed this year, but Diana Ross’ daughter Tracee Ellis Ross surprised her Saturday by remaking the legendary singer’s “Work That Body” music video.

“I decided to recreate the video and try to feel the joy of being in my body while offering up tribute to my glorious mother,” Ellis Ross wrote on her website. “I hope it inspires you to find and be in the joy of your own body!”

The Black-ish star dances around in colored leotards and lifts weights in between clips of Ross’s 1981 video. At the end, Ellis Ross thanks her mom, and asks her, “What do you think? I think you’re so much hotter than me!”

On her website, Ellis Ross further explains why she felt the “Work It” video was relevant almost 35 years later. “It didn’t feel like she was dancing as a presentation of herself or like she was offering up her bits, which I feel like most videos are these days,” she writes. “Often in today’s images (moving and still), we are being objectified or we objectifying ourselves. I think it is meant to be an empowered act, a reclaiming of our bodies.”

As a result, Ellis Ross hopes women can “shift our gaze from how we are seen to how we are seeing and, more important, feeling,” and embrace her mother’s message: “She seems to be saying, ‘This is ME feeling good and I am strong and sexy and joyful in ME'”!
