Sam Smith Bond theme: Writing's On The Wall release

Sam Smith’s Bond theme song is finally here. “Writing’s On The Wall,” which will soundtrack the next James Bond film, Spectre, debuted early Friday morning after making its radio premiere in the U.K. The song was available on iTunes and Spotify soon after.

“If I risk it all, could you break my fall?” Smith sings on the somber tune. “How do I live? How do I breath? When you’re not here I’m suffocating. I want to feel love flow through my blood, tell me is this where I give it all up. For you, I have to risk it all. Because the writing’s on the wall.”

Smith had denied that he would perform the new Bond theme, but officially announced the song earlier this month. “This is one of the highlights of my career. I am honored to finally announce that I will be singing the next Bond theme song,” Smith said in a statement. “I am so excited to be a part of this iconic British legacy and join an incredible line up of some of my biggest musical inspirations. I hope you all enjoy the song as much as I enjoyed making it.”

He worked on the track with frequent collaborators, Jimmy Napes, and Guy and Howard Lawrence of Disclosure, and teased the song in the weeks leading up to its release. “Thank you so much to everyone pre-ordering, cannot wait for you to hear ‘Writing’s On The Wall,'” he wrote earlier this week.

Smith is the first British male solo artist to sing the Bond theme song since 1965, when Tom Jones recorded a track for Thunderball. Adele performed the last Bond theme, “Skyfall,” which came away with trophies from the Oscars, Grammys, and Golden Globes.
