Kurt Cobain Sappy solo recording

Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck not only gives Nirvana fans an unparalleled look at the life of the troubled frontman through rare home videos, artwork and journals, but it also offers a ton of never-before-heard recordings, one of which was released on Monday.

While true Nirvana fans are familiar with “Sappy” — it was included on Nirvana’s 2004 release With The Lights Out and rough versions of the recording of the demo have been floating around online — this is the first official listen to Cobain’s solo demo of the track. It will be included on a 7-inch vinyl hitting shelves on Nov. 20, one week after the release of the documentary’s soundtrack, Kurt Cobain – Montage of Heck: The Home Recordings. Also on the vinyl will be Cobain’s never-before-heard cover of The Beatles’ “And I Love Her.’

The soundtrack to the Brett Morgen-directed documentary will be filled “various early and raw cassette recordings made by Kurt alone,” according to a release from Universal Music. It will be released as a 13-track CD and digitally, with a 31-track double-vinyl deluxe edition hitting shelves Dec. 4. A full tracklist has not yet been released.

When it premiered at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival, Montage of Heck received a glowing review from EW’s Chris Nashawaty, who gave it an “A” and praised Morgen for showing viewers “the man instead of the myth.” Following the premiere, the documentary saw a limited theatrical run and HBO premiere and was re-released in select theaters on Aug. 7.
