Quentin Tarantino talks Hateful Eight, 70mm filmmaking with Paul Thomas Anderson

On Christmas Eve, the day before The Hateful Eight opened in its 70mm roadshow limited release, Quentin Tarantino sat down in his home screening room for a conversation about his latest effort and the future of film in the age of digital cinema.

Paul Thomas Anderson (Boogie Nights, There Will Be Blood) and Deadline's Pete Hammond joined Tarantino for the Q&A, in which he praised the 70mm format over digital and IMAX filmmaking.

"You can't even have an intelligent argument about it being bested by any of the digital stuff. There's no intelligent argument to be had that puts digital, even the greatest IMAX situation, in front of that," Tarantino said. "How that actually might be film's saving grace. It might be film's last stand. It might be film's last night in the arena and actually conquer. We'll see what the deal is."

The 40-minute interview with Tarantino and Anderson (who used 70mm for his 2012 film The Master) also touched on some of their memorable experiences as moviegoers (including how Anderson felt after seeing The Empire Strikes Back).

The Hateful Eight, starring Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell (who said he'd love to bring the film to Broadway), Jennifer Jason Leigh, Walton Goggins, Demian Bichir, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, Bruce Dern, and Channing Tatum, will debut in 70mm in 100 theaters before expanding nationwide on New Year's Day.
