Nancy Drew revival will focus on non-white heroine

Teen sleuth Nancy Drew is all grown up and getting a makeover. A new series in development at CBS reimagines the young heroine from the classic book series as a thirty-something NYPD detective, and EW has confirmed that the network’s intent is for the character to be “diverse.”

The news was first reported by The Hollywood Reporter: “She is diverse, that is the way she is written,” CBS Entertainment president Glenn Geller told THR, adding, “[She will] not [be] Caucasian… I’d be open to any ethnicity.”

Nancy Drew, first introduced in 1930, has been portrayed on multiple occasions on the big and small screens, always by caucasian actresses. She was most recently played by Emma Roberts in Warner Bros. 2007 film, which received mixed reviews and $30 million worldwide.

CBS first revealed its plans for a potential Nancy Drew series in October, teasing an updated heroine who “investigates and solves crimes using her uncanny observational skills, all while navigating the complexities of life in a modern world.”

The drama is executive produced by Dan Jinks and Grey’s Anatomy writers/producers Tony Phelan and Joan Rater.
