Sean Penn's El Chapo interview 'has failed,' he tells Charlie Rose

Sean Penn’s interview with El Chapo for Rolling Stone has been making headlines ever since it came out Jan. 9, but Penn’s not satisfied with the response: “Let me be clear,” he told Charlie Rose on an upcoming episode of 60 Minutes. “My article has failed.”

In a clip from the 60 Minutes interview, Penn explains that he wanted to interview El Chapo because he thought it’d be an effective way to “begin a conversation.” The conversation that he was hoping for hasn’t happened yet though, Penn says.

“I have a regret that the entire discussion about this article ignores its purpose, which was to try to contribute to this discussion about the policy of the war on drugs,” he said. “Let’s go to the big picture of what we all want. We all want this drug problem to stop.”

Penn also addressed claims that his interview helped lead to the recapture of El Chapo, a statement that he disagrees with. “We know that the Mexican government, they were very clearly humiliated by the notion that, ‘Someone found him before we did,'” he said, referring to the fact that Penn conducted the interview over three months before El Chapo was arrested.

“Nobody found him before [they] did,” he went on. “We’re not smarter than the DEA or the Mexican intelligence. We had a contact upon which we were able to facilitate an invitation.”
