The cast of Freaks and Geeks — which included Linda Cardellini, James Franco, Seth Rogen, and Jason Segel — have proven to be a remarkably talented bunch of folks, both on- and off-screen. “It took us a beat to realize how funny they were,” says Apatow. “When we hired Jason Segel, we didn’t think, ‘Oh, this guy can write this.’ And we didn’t know how funny Seth was — we just thought he had a funny voice, and seemed like a weird guy, and it felt natural that he would be part of this group. And it took us a little while to go, ‘Oh, he might be like a genius-guy!’ “
