Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt season 2: Peeno Noir redux will be 'horrifying'

As season 2 of Netflix’s Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt approaches, fans might wonder whether anything in the next 13-episode cycle (dropping April 15) could stand to replace ��Peeno Noir” as the show’s reigning viral video hit — besides its catchy theme song, of course.

Good news: There may indeed be a contender.

Star Tituss Burgess has already teased his “absurd” new tune, but Kimmy Schmidt co-creator Robert Carlock tells EW that he’s already honed in on his pick for the new shareable song that might knock “Peeno” off its peedestal.

“I’m hoping the viral song is a song that Titus, in a sort of feverish fugue, sings about teeth. I’ll say no more,” says Carlock. “It might be my favorite thing, but it’s going to be fun and bright and funny and also horrifying. A mixed tone — these kinds of things where they sound like they shouldn’t be funny — might be what Tina [Fey] and I have decided that’s we do now.”

In general, season 2 will boast more singing and dancing all around, if only because Carlock and company had so much fun exploring musical moments in Kimmy’s first outing last year. “It always has to make sense and be driven by story,” Carlock warns. “I think you could have done a 30 Rock where everyone was singing and they find out there’s a gas leak or something. But as extreme as the situations are in the Kimmy Schmidt world, we try to live in a realer version. Kimmy already has a song in her heart, and it’s part of Titus’s character as a theater guy to know that songs can be an effective way to communicate emotion.”

But what about Tony winner Jane Krakowski, who plays divorced socialite Jacqueline? “The bitter irony is that we think Jacqueline can’t sing,” laughs Carlock. “Poor Jane has to just sit there and listen to everyone else.”
