Cyndi Lauper: North Carolina anti-LGBT HB2 law the focus of singer's upcoming concert

Bruce Springsteen, Ringo Starr, and Cirque du Soleil all canceled performances in North Carolina to protest the state’s anti-LGBT law. For Cyndi Lauper, the show will go on, but the singer announced all profits from her June 4 concert in Raleigh will go to support the fight against HB2.

In a personal note published to her website, Lauper wrote, “The best way I know how to make a difference is what I have strived to do my whole life and that is show up for my family, friends, and fans in the LGBT community. So, for that reason I think the best way I can do my part is to turn my show in Raleigh on June 4th into an entire day to build public support to repeal HB2.”

She continued, “I will be donating all of the profits from the show to Equality North Carolina‘s efforts to repeal HB2 and I am proud of my manager and agent for joining me in this effort by donating their commissions from the show to this vital effort. I look forward to coming to North Carolina and standing up for equality and fairness.”

Equality North Carolina seeks to secure equal rights for the LGBT population in the state and has been working to repeal HB2, also known as the “bathroom bill.” Lauper’s support of the organization follows in the footsteps of Joel McHale, who donated proceeds from a recent comedy show to the LGBT Center of Durham.

Billy Ray Cyrus and Gregg Allman also rank among the celebrities who’ve spoken out against the law, while others are fighting similar bills in other states.

“The pressure to repeal HB2 is building and it is beautiful,” Lauper’s note read. “In the dark haze of such oppression, people and companies are stepping up to fight back against this unjust law and ensure that all North Carolinians are treated with dignity and respect, especially the transgender community.”
