Hamilton: Tony Awards record 16 nominations

History is indeed happening in Manhattan for Hamilton.

Lin-Manuel Miranda’s groundbreaking, Grammy- and Pulitzer Prize-winning musical about the life of Alexander Hamilton picked up a record 16 Tony nominations on Tuesday morning,

Along with a nomination for Best Musical and creator-star Miranda (nominated as an actor and for the show’s book and score), the show picked up nominations for actors Leslie Odom Jr. (Aaron Burr), Phillipa Soo (Eliza Schuyler), Daveed Diggs (Lafayette/Thomas Jefferson), Jonathan Groff (King George), Christopher Jackson (George Washington), and Renee Elise Goldsberry (Angelica Schuyler).

The previous record for the most Tony nominations was set in 2001 when The Producers picked up 15 nominations. In 2009, Billy Elliot, The Musical tied that number.

Both of those shows now slide to second place on the nominations list, but The Producers still holds the record for most Tony wins for a musical production, with 12. We’ll have to wait until next month to see if Hamilton‘s non-stop domination will extend to taking that record, too.
