When Wayward Pines returns for its second season, fans will be seeing the last town on earth through fresh eyes.

In this exclusive look behind the scenes of the psychological thriller, showrunner/ executive producer Mark Friedman and executive producers M. Night Shyamalan and Donald De Line tease what’s next for the town of Wayward Pines, which found itself under new rule by the end of the first season finale.

“Where we originally thought it could end was actually an opportunity for a great new beginning for us,” says De Line.

That new beginning starts with Dr. Theo Yeldin, played by Jason Patric, whom Shyamalan calls a “beautiful, artistic choice for Wayward Pines.” Theo, a new resident of the town, wakes from suspended animation to find himself in the middle of a rebellion he’s still trying to understand. As a surgeon, he could play a key role in saving the endangered human race.

“We’re moving like a bullet toward this end,” says Shyamalan.

Also joining the second season are cast members Tom Stevens, returning from season 1 as Jason Higgins; Nimrat Kaur as Rebecca, Theo’s wife; Josh Helman as Xander, a resident working to undermine Wayward Pines from within; and Kacey Rohl as Kerry, one of Jason’s lieutenants in the civil war going on in Wayward Pines.

Cast members returning for season 2 include Terrence Howard, Carla Gugino, Toby Jones, Melissa Leo, Tim Griffin, Shannyn Sossamon, and Charlie Tahan.

Wayward Pines returns May 25 at 9 p.m. ET on Fox. Check out the exclusive video above.
