The Hills movie adaptation closer than ever

The Hills could be alive once again: EW has exclusively learned that a movie adaptation of the hit MTV reality series, which premiered 10 years ago this week, is closer than ever to happening.

A source says that stars Kristin Cavallari, Whitney Port, and Audrina Patridge were all approached and expressed interest to do a reunion movie — but Lauren Conrad has been the one holdout. As the star of the series, her involvement is pivotal for the project to move forward. (Conrad’s rep declined to comment on the potential project.)

The source also tells EW that the initial concept for the film would be to begin with Patridge’s wedding in Australia (she’s engaged to Aussie BMX biker Corey Bohan) with her friends in attendance. Then, it would catch up with the cast, who are now almost all in their 30s and leading very different lives (marriages, kids, etc.), à la the first Sex and the City movie. No word on if Les Deux will make a special return appearance.

Reboots of popular series from the last 20 years are hugely popular material as of late, as seen with the returns of Gilmore Girls, The X-Files, and next year’s Prison Break. A movie/reunion of The Hills has been something fans have wondered about since the series ended in 2010.

The Hills, which premiered May 31, 2006, was a spin-off of MTV’s Laguna Beach and followed Conrad as she moved to Los Angeles and landed an internship at Teen Vogue. The series became a pop culture phenomenon, landing the cast on multiple magazine covers, including EW, and launched Conrad’s career as a successful businesswoman.

On the 10-year anniversary of the show on Tuesday, Conrad announced she will appear in a TV special, The Hills: That Was Then, This Is Now, airing Aug. 2 at 10 p.m. ET on MTV.
