Flatliners reboot: Beau Mirchoff joins cast in supporting role

Awkward‘s Beau Mirchoff is graduating from high school to medical school as part of the star-studded cast of Sony’s Flatliners reboot, EW can confirm.

The 27-year old joins Ellen Page, Diego Luna, Vampire Diaries star Nina Dobrev, and James Norton in the upcoming remake of the popular 90s thriller. Mirchoff is set for the supporting role of Brad, part of a gang of medical students who, curious about what lies beyond the realm of the living, conduct secret experiments that produce near-death experiences. Dobrev will reportedly play Marlo, described as an “overachiever,” while Page will lead the cast.

The 1990 original, directed by Joel Schumacher, stars Kevin Bacon, Julia Roberts and Kiefer Sutherland, whom EW previously confirmed was nearing a deal to return for the remake. It grossed more than $61 million domestically on top of earning an Oscar nomination in the Sound category.

Danish filmmaker Niels Arden Oplev, who directed the first cinematic adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, is set to helm Flatliners for Sony. His recent credits include the Colin Farrell-starring Dead Man Down and the pilot episode of the USA Network’s Mr. Robot. Source Code scribe Ben Ripley wrote the Flatliners screenplay, with actor Michael Douglas returning to produce the revival film alongside David Blackman and Laurence Mark.

Prior to boarding Flatliners, Mirchoff played one of the series leads across five seasons of MTV’s Awkward, and even directed one of the program’s final episodes. He also starred in the sci-fi YA adaptation I Am Number Four on top of appearing in series like ABC’s Desperate Housewives and NBC’s Aquarius in recurring parts.
