Dear Evan Hansen debuts Waving Through a Window music video

Dear Evan Hansen doesn’t make its Broadway bow until later this year, but its sold-out, award-winning Off-Broadway run has already captured the hearts of fans, and now the show is celebrating devotees right back.

EW is exclusively premiering a new music video for the song “Waving Through a Window” inspired by and including fan art for the musical. The Dear Evan Hansen team incorporated actual pieces of fan art into the piece, along with footage of Ben Platt (who is reprising his role for the Broadway production) in the recording studio, to create a journey through the song’s lyrics and theme.

The resulting video is filled with blue tones and nature motifs — the latter especially fitting as Platt’s Hansen wonders, “When you’re falling in the forest and there’s nobody around, do you ever really crash or even make a sound?”

Dear Evan Hansen follows the titular character, whose life as an outsider is flipped after he writes a pivotal letter that changes everyone around him. It features a book by Obie Award-winner Steven Levenson, direction by three-time Tony nominee Michael Greif, and an original score by Tony-nominated wunderkinds team Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (Dogfight, A Christmas Story).

Watch the “Waving Through a Window” video above, and you can check out more fan art at the show’s official Tumblr page. Dear Evan Hansen begins previews at Broadway’s Music Box Theatre on Nov. 14, 2016, with an official opening night set for Dec. 4, 2016.
