Lin-Manuel Miranda to present Mary Poppins screening at Washington Heights' United Palace Theatre

Lin-Manuel Miranda is bringing the magic of Mary Poppins to New York City’s Washington Heights for a special screening of the classic 1964 film.

Mary Poppins will screen at the United Palace Theatre on Oct. 16, introduced by the Hamilton creator, who will soon begin production on Mary Poppins Returns. Miranda, a native New Yorker, wrote about neighborhood for his first Broadway musical, In the Heights. He has a history of supporting the United Palace Theatre, including staging the five-year anniversary concert of In the Heights there. According to a release, he recently donated $100,000 to upgrade the theater’s projection system, which will debut the night of the Marry Poppins screening.

This event also serves as a kick-off for the fundraising campaign Reawaken Wonder at a Timeless Movie Palace, which will re-outfit the theater for movie screenings. The United Palace originally opened as a movie theater in 1930, and the venue plans to officially unveil the upgrade in 2017.

“There is no other theatre like United Palace in New York City, or around the world, really. This theatre is special. It’s breathtaking. You don’t just come to sit and watch a movie here; you are transported. The full movie-going experience always leaves me mesmerized,” said Miranda during a recent event at the theater. “As a Northern Manhattan native, local resident, and film lover, I am proud to continue to help revitalize this timeless movie palace.”
