In the vein of classic horror, the new teaser for Olivier Assayas’ Personal Shopper focuses the terror on a build of suspense, otherworldly questions, and personal tragedy.

Kristen Stewart stars in the thriller as Maureen, a young American in Paris working as a personal shopper for a celebrity client. The foreign area brings back haunting memories as her twin brother, Lewis, recently died in their family home. Besides being born on the same day, the pair also shares the uncanny ability to channel spirits, which sends Maureen down a rabbit hole of mystery and trauma.

Some of Assayas’ camera work channels that of classic Alfred Hitchcock movies, with slow-moving shots pushing the viewer into a sense of urgency. Stewart is confronted by various off-camera sights and sounds, begging the question of ghostly influence and whether it’s tied to her brother’s death.

Assayas won this year’s Cannes Film Festival Best Director prize for the upcoming thriller (he tied with Graduation director Cristian Mungiu). This is Stewart and Assayas’ second film together, first collaborating on the critically acclaimed Clouds of Sils Maria. Stewart won the Best Supporting Actress César Award (France’s equivalent of the Oscars) for her performance, making her the first American actress to do so.

Personal Shopper opens March 10, 2017. See the new trailer above.
