Jack O'Connell to play Alexander McQueen in biopic from Andrew Haigh

Jack O’Connell, the actor who fronted recent films by Angelina Jolie (Unbroken) and Jodie Foster (Money Monster) is attached to play late fashion designer Alexander McQueen in an upcoming Andrew Haigh-directed biopic, EW has confirmed.

Haigh, who directed Charlotte Rampling to an Oscar nomination in the 2015 marital drama 45 Years and produced several episodes of the short-lived HBO series Looking, will direct the film from a script written by Chris Urch, the playwright behind productions like Land of Our Fathers and The Rolling Stone. Urch’s script is adapted from Blood Beneath the Skin by Andrew Wilson.

According to Variety, production on the Damian Jones-produced film will begin in spring of 2017, with Pathe hoping to release in the U.K., France, and Switzerland by the end of next year. The distributor also issued a statement Tuesday with more details about the planned film.

“In 2009, Alexander McQueen put on one of his greatest shows — a stunningly beautiful re-working of his greatest designs from the past 15 years,” the statement reads. “It was a show that he dedicated to his mother and one in which he tried to make sense of his life and art. The film explores McQueen’s creative process in the months leading up to the show, providing an intimate portrait of the man behind the global brand — a moving celebration of a visionary genius whose designs transcended fashion to become art.”

In addition to his work on Unbroken and Money Monster, 26-year-old O’Connell joins the production after critically well-received turns in Yann Demange’s war thriller ’71 and David Mackenzie’s prison drama Starred Up. He previously won the prestigious EE Rising Star Award over the likes of Shailene Woodley, Miles Teller, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, and Margot Robbie at the 2015 BAFTA awards ceremony.
