Pitch struggles with a tricky premise

While Fox’s new series Pitch has a lot of its world rooted in reality, Bingeworthy’s Touré isn’t completely sold on the baseball drama’s realism.

“Asking women to compete directly with men sets up a false comparison,” says the host, bringing up how Serena Williams doesn’t need to compete against Roger Federer in order to be considered the greatest athlete of all time. “The notion that we’re going to smush men and women on the same playing field, seems to me, to be pursuing the wrong avenue.”

His co-host Jessica Shaw disagrees, pointing out that Pitch, which focuses on the first female pitcher in the Major League Baseball, is a “scripted show” and “fantasy” on some level.

“This is like showing, how in this one arena, in this one show, a woman pitcher can kick ass,” adds Shaw. “I think there’s an interesting story there, while still not rooted in any realism.”
