The Shape of Water leads Critics' Choice Awards nominations

The wide-open Oscar race has definitively narrowed in favor of Guillermo del Toro, as one of the most reliable Oscar portents, the Broadcast Film Critics Association, lifts The Shape of Water into the best picture conversation with a staggering 14 nominations.

Leading all film nominees by a significant margin, The Shape of Water‘s success with the BFCA also sees lead actress Sally Hawkins picking up her second major notice on the awards trail thus far, just three days after she took the Los Angeles Film Critics Association’s best actress prize. The film additionally steamrolled the technical categories, and its supporting cast — including Richard Jenkins and Octavia Spencer — picked up nods for their work as well.

Trailing The Shape of Water with eight nods each are Luca Guadagnino’s Sundance breakout Call Me by Your Name (hot off best film victories from the Gotham Awards and the LAFCA), Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird (the New York Film Critics Circle’s best film of 2017), Steven Spielberg’s late-breaking entry The Post, and Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk, which here receives its first high profile precursor boost with major nominations for best picture, best director, and best acting ensemble.

On the acting front, best actress is packed with the usual suspects pundits have touted since the early days of this year’s race, (Jessica Chastain, Meryl Streep, Sally Hawkins, Frances McDormand, Margot Robbie, Saoirse Ronan), as is best actor (Timothée Chalamet, James Franco, Jake Gyllenhaal, Tom Hanks, Daniel Kaluuya, Daniel Day-Lewis, Gary Oldman).

Since 2007, the Critics Choice Awards have correctly predicted the eventual best picture winner seven times, while that number jumps to eight for best actor contenders, and dips to five for the best actress contest.

As for television nominees, FX’s Feud: Bette and Joan leads the pack with six overall nominations, including three for cast members, including Jessica Lange, Stanley Tucci, Alfred Molina, Judy Davis, and Jackie Hoffman, though Lange’s co-lead, Susan Sarandon, is noticeably absent from the lineup.

The 23rd Annual Critics’ Choice Awards air Thursday, Jan. 11 at 8:00 p.m. ET on The CW. See the full list of film and television nominees below.
