The Favourite, RuPaul's Drag Race win Costume Designers Guild Awards

The 2019 Costume Designers Guild Awards have stitched a potentially winning narrative for three films in the below-the-line Oscar race.

Among the top film winners at the industry guild’s annual ceremony, hosted by Kate Walsh on Tuesday night at the Beverly Hilton, were current Academy Award-contending designers Sandy Powell (whose alternatively approached historical designs for The Favourite triumphed in the Period Film contest) and Ruth E. Carter (who earned the CDG Award in the Sci-Fi/Fantasy Film category for her Black Panther designs). Crazy Rich Asians‘ Mary E. Vogt rounded out the movie categories with a win for her Contemporary Film crafts.

Other 2019 Oscar nominees who contended for this year’s CDG Awards include Alexandra Byrne’s elaborate Mary Queen of Scots designs and Powell’s work on Mary Poppins Returns.

Since the first CDG Awards recognizing films released in 1998, no Contemporary Film winner has gone on to win the Oscar, though three (Pleasantville, The Queen, La La Land) have received corresponding Oscar nominations; Across the same period, every CDG Award-winner for Period Film (except for 2016’s Hidden Figures) has gone on to either win (seven) or be nominated for (12) the Best Costume Design Oscar; Those numbers dip to four and eight crossover winners/nominees among the Sci-Fi/Fantasy set.

On the narrative television side, the CDG Awards recognized The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story (Lou Eyrich & Allison Leach), The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (Donna Zakowska), and Westworld (Sharen Davis), while RuPaul’s Drag Race designer Zaldy Goco took home the reality series trophy.

The Wife star (and current Best Actress frontrunner) Glenn Close received the group’s Spotlight Award for her “talent and career [that personifies] an enduring commitment to excellence, including a special awareness of the role and importance of costume design,” per a press release, while Ryan Murphy earned the Distinguished Collaborator Award.
