Bryan Cranston wants to bring The Office to the big screen, shares idea for his character

Cranston, who directed a season 9 episode of the beloved sitcom, floated his idea for a movie on Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey's "Office Ladies" podcast.

There's been lots of chatter lately about potentially reviving or rebooting the beloved workplace comedy series The Office — and Bryan Cranston wants in on the action.

On the latest episode of Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey's Office Ladies podcast, the Breaking Bad and Malcolm in the Middle star floated the idea of bringing the Dunder Mifflin gang back, but this time on the big screen.

"Let's say that there's not a reboot series, but what if there was a movie?" said Cranston, who notably directed the Office episode "Work Bus" in season 9. "Something to where we can see where these people are. These people in the entire cast that we're curious about. We wondered at the end, where did they go? What did become of them?"

Both Fischer and Kinsey were quick to say they'd be in, if the circumstances were right. "I would do it," Kinsey replied. "I would do it for my kids, because I think they would think that's fun."

"I mean, if [showrunner] Greg [Daniels] did it, because I would trust it. You know?" Fischer said. "As long as Greg is writing it and he's in charge of it, then I say yes."

As for Cranston, he's ready to get in front of the camera for this go-around. "I just want to be an extra in it," he said. "I would be an extra in it. I would be some guy. I'd be a crossing guard or something like that. Just something."

But Kinsey had bigger ideas for him. "Maybe you're like one of Dwight's hired hands on Schrute Farms," she suggested.

Talk of revisiting The Office has ebbed and flowed since the massively popular NBC sitcom concluded in 2013, after nine seasons. In 2019, Daniels spoke to EW about the odds of bringing the show back in some fashion. "We got the chance to end it the way we wanted to end it," he said. "It wasn't like we were interrupted in the middle of a run or something. So in a sense, it's completely an artistic whole. But, that said, I don't know, the cast every now and then talks about getting back together in some form, but I don't see it being a reboot like the way Will & Grace was rebooted."

Last fall, Daniels addressed another round of reboot rumors. "When there's something to announce, I will definitely announce it," he said.

Before Cranston's pitch, Kinsey and Fischer discussed the potential reboot in predictably vague terms. "We hear Greg is working on something. But it's not involving the same cast. We should say that," Fischer said, before adding, "I would love to pop on as a guest."

"Me too!" Kinsey said.

However, Fischer doesn't envision a scenario where the original cast returning would make sense. "I don't see bringing Pam back in a sort of permanent way and following her life again," she said. "But, you know, Greg Daniels is a person who could think it up and pitch it to me and get me on board. But I can't think of it."

That said, if a reboot was focused on the next generation of Dunder Mifflin employees, Kinsey thinks there's one original cast member who'd still be on staff at the floundering paper company: "We think Creed would still be there."
