Veep star Julia Louis-Dreyfus is 'numb' after making Emmy history

Julia Louis-Dreyfus made history Sunday night. Not only did she break Candice Bergen’s record of Emmy wins for a singular role, winning her sixth in a row for Veep, she has now tied Cloris Leachman’s record eight Emmy wins by a singular performer.

“I don’t know what to say about it other than I’m numb,” Louis-Dreyfus said backstage. “I can’t believe it. I adore Cloris Leachman. All I think about is her in Young Frankenstein going, ‘He was my boyfriend.’ I’m just incredibly honored and amazed this has happened to me. It’s all very baffling and a sh— ton of good luck.”

Louis-Dreyfus was among many females who scored golden statues on Sunday night, including Master of None‘s Lena Waithe and The Handmaid’s Tale��s Reed Morano, which the Veep star hopes spells good news for the future of entertainment. “God I hope so,” Louis-Dreyfus says. “Let’s hope that this is the beginning of something even better in our country and in the world because I think the world would be a better place if women were in charge.”

Veep as a series also won big, taking home outstanding comedy series for the third year in a row. Executive producer David Mandel joked backstage that the comparison between the HBO show and the real-world administration isn’t so clear cut anymore. “I guess I’m honestly just glad that in our world Selina lost so we get to do our own show,” Mandel said. “Obviously the comparison is going to be drawn, but you’re not watching us do a scene in the Oval Office and then watching him do a scene in the Oval Office. He ends up being the 30 Rock to our Studio 60. I think they’re doing a better job being funnier.”

When asked what the show has done that Mandel hopes will happen in real life, the Veep boss said, “In our show, when Selina does something horrible and craven or lies, she gets caught and actually pays a price for it.”

Veep begins production soon on its seventh and final season, which will debut in 2018.
