Golden Globes 2016: 'Writing's on the Wall' wins Best Original Song

Take a bow, Sam Smith: You’ve nabbed your first Golden Globe. The English crooner and songwriting collaborator Jimmy Napes won the Best Original Song prize for penning “Writing’s on the Wall,” the leading song from the most recent James Bond film, Spectre.

“Honestly, on a real level, I genuinely didn’t even think we were going to get this,” Smith said during Sunday night’s ceremony. “This has been the most interesting night of my life. This is amazing.”

The “Stay With Me” singer was the second Bond theme to win this distinction, the other being Adele’s monstrous titular ballad for 2012’s Skyfall. Smith’s is more brooding and elegiac than Adele’s, coupled with a video of the 23-year-old staring down military caskets.

“This is a dream come true,” Napes added. “To get to write a song for James Bond is unbelievable.”

For the award, Smith and Napes bested “Love Me Like You Do” by Ellie Goulding from Fifty Shades of Grey, “One Kind of Love” by Brian Wilson from Love & Mercy, Furious 7‘s “See You Again” performed by Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth, and “Simple Song #3” from Youth.

This could be only the beginning of Smith following in Adele’s footsteps of award-winning Bond themes: “Writing’s on the Wall” could score an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song on Thursday; Adele grabbed the Oscar during 2013’s ceremony. But Smith has yet considered that reality yet.

“I haven’t really thought about that if I’m honest,” Smith said backstage. “I mean I want to think about it, but I’m trying not to think about it. It would be pretty sick, wouldn’t it?”
