Johnny Marr slams Donald Trump for playing Smiths song at rally: 'Consider this s--- shut right down'

"I never in a million years would’ve thought this could come to pass," the guitarist wrote.

Heaven knows Johnny Marr is miserable now after learning that Donald Trump used one of The Smiths’ songs at his political rallies.

On Tuesday, Marr reacted to a thread posted on X (formerly Twitter) that featured video footage of the band’s 1984 hit “Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want” reportedly being played at a Republican event in South Dakota.

“Ahh…right…OK,” Marr wrote. “I never in a million years would’ve thought this could come to pass. Consider this s--- shut right down right now.”

EW has reached out to Marr’s representatives, who offered no further comment.

The guitarist, who penned the song with Smiths frontman Morrissey, joins a growing list of artists who have publicly rebuked Trump for using their songs at his rallies, including Adele, Guns N’ Roses, Aerosmith, Neil Young, Rihanna, Ozzy Osbourne, Nickelback, Panic! at the Disco, Queen, R.E.M, and the estates of Laura Branigan, Prince, and George Harrison.

Other artists like the Rolling Stones, Pharrell, Linkin Park, Village People, and Tom Petty’s estate have issued cease-and-desists to Trump for utilizing their music during his events. Still, despite not having permission, Trump has continued to play some of the aforementioned artists' songs while out on the campaign trail.
