Kumail Nanjiani's The Big Sick gets summer release date

From the snow-covered peaks of Park City, Lionsgate is bringing the red-hot acquisition title The Big Sick into the summer movie season.

The distributor announced Tuesday it has set the Sundance crowd-pleaser for a June 23 limited bow, with nationwide expansion scheduled for July 14.

The Big Sick, written by stars Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon and based on their real-life relationship, had its world premiere at the Utah-based festival in January, where it received glowing reviews from critics.

Michael Showalter directed the project, about a couple grappling with their differences, while Judd Apatow and Barry Mendel produced. Ray Romano, Holly Hunter, Zoe Kazan, and Aidy Bryant costar.

Amazon Studios previously bought the film out of the annual festival for approximately $12 million. The Big Sick's theatrical release marks the second time Lionsgate has handled domestic distribution for an Amazon title, following the debut of Woody Allen's Cannes opener Cafe Society last year. Lionsgate's Roadside Attractions label is currently in the thick of the Oscar race with Manchester by the Sea, which Amazon purchased out of Sundance in 2016.
